First Response: Face to face (6-hour training course) N12

The first aid training delivered at Scouts – also known as First Response – is a 6 hours course that provides the skills and knowledge to enable our volunteers to keep Scouts members as safe as possible while they are in our care.

By the end of the course, participants will be:

• Provided with simple first aid information which is relevant to their role
• Helped to build confidence and skills in coping with emergency and first aid situations
• Equipped with the knowledge needed to manage these emergencies

The First Response course focuses on three main areas:

1. Life support: The principles of first aid and initial response (arriving and managing an incident), emergency life support, CPR (including technique for children and an explanation of what AED is and how to use it), management of an unconscious casualty (child and adult), and choking.
2. Trauma and injury: Shock, bleeding, fractures (ambulance imminent and non-imminent) and sprains, head injuries, dental incidents, and burns.
3. Major illnesses: Asthma, anaphylaxis, heart attack, stroke, seizures, diabetes, sepsis and meningitis.

These courses are not intended for Young Leaders, although they may sometimes attended if there has been prior arrangement with the County Training Manager.

What if I have a current First Aid certificate – do I still need to do 1st Response? 

Possibly not. We have provided the list of requirements of 1st Response training.  If you have recently done a course which meets these requirements, (or most of them)  then you simply need to offer this as evidence to your Local Training Manager (LTM)  or Training Adviser.  For your Local Training Manager CLICK HERE   For more online information about 1^st Response  CLICK HERE

The syllabus has recently been adapted and now focused on conditions where prompt recognition and/or life-saving treatment is required. In addition, some conditions have been included because they occur most frequently on incident/accident reports submitted to both the Scouts and Girlguiding.

Our trainers will add some additional content not listed on the syllabus and this will be made clear to participants and will not detract from the core syllabus and training plan.
