From the 8th to 10th October 2021, 31 Explorers from 6 Units representing North London District, Barnet District, Enfield District and Southgate District alongside 13 leaders from 9 different Groups and Explorer Units across the same 4 Districts took to the hills in Snowdonia. The weekend was arranged to give Explorers a first taste of hillwalking in this terrain. There were 6 groups walking on both Saturday and Sunday who covered Pen yr Ole Wen, Glyder Fach, Elidir Fawr and Moel Siabod on Saturday and Crimpiau on Sunday.
This was the first of what we hope will become an annual event for Explorer Scouts in GLN. The attendance was limited to a maximum of 36 Explorers – sadly, 5 Explorers had to drop out of the weekend with not enough notice to recruit anymore. The young people came from Bush Hill Park ESU, Gough Park ESU and Parker Bowles ESU in Enfield, Tottenham ESU in North London District, Vernons Venturers in Barnet and the Hatters in Southgate. We were blessed with some relatively kind weather which allowed leaders to push Explorers to summits and ensure that they enjoyed an unforgettable weekend (even if the views were limited by cloud at the top!).
We stayed at Arete Outdoor Centre and the weekend was a triumph of what can be achieved when leaders from across the County work together. The Explorers were incredibly resilient and learned ahuge amount over the weekend. Four minibuses were driven to North Wales and catering provided by the leader team for the young people so there was a big team who were all a huge part of the successful weekend. One of our favourite comments was an Explorer exclaiming, “I wasn’t expecting anything this challenging, this is awesome!”
Thank you so much to those who led groups and drove minibuses to make all this possible!
