Winter Mountaineering Skills Weekend 25th-27th January – what to expect!
A final reminder about our Winter Mountaineering skills weekend in Snowdonia on January 25th – 27th. Places are going fast and details can be found here but if you are not sure what to expect, Asa Kitchener from the Activities ASU has put together this short guide:
The aim of the weekend is to share knowledge and experience of winter hillwalking. We make this as practical as possible, based on the prevailing weather and ground conditions.
The evening session beforehand is very important as this is where we put people into groups based on their aspirations and experience. We then tailor the course content to suit the needs of the groups.
On Saturday we will go out in groups for a day on the hills. Each group will have a different route and program based on the information shared during the evening session mentioned above. Saturday evening is a chance to feedback what we have learned and work on any further skills in the comfort of the hut. We then discuss what we can do on Sunday based on the weather and what we all want to work on. Groups from here on may change to suit you.
Our instructors will ensure that you get a great and informative experience based on your needs and the prevailing conditions. Below are some of the things we can cover.
Equipment for winter hillwalking, what to carry on the hill as an individual and a group leader, environmental issues, winter weather, avalanche awareness, winter navigation, winter movement skills, ice axe and crampon technique, security on steep ground, cold injury prevention and treatment, dealing with water hazards, winter group leadership and how this all fits into the Scout Association rules.
We can work specifically on any of the above, depending on what people want.
Whereas we can guarantee you a fun, friendly learning experience, we can’t guarantee the weather. In the event of there being no snow and pouring rain, we’ll do our best!
