I Never Realised I could Walk That Far
Adventurous Scouts from Phoenix Explorers joined hundreds of other young people and adults in Scouting in challenging weather conditions by taking part in The Southern 50 Challenge Hike, an annual navigation activity event in the Chiltern Hills of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
A total of nearly 80 teams of four from across the UK have taken part in one of three routes, 50 miles, 50 km or 30 km, and the participants had 24 hours to complete their task. Just before they started the event they were given twenty different six figure map references which pointed to checkpoints, and they had to successfully navigate to each of these checkpoints in order.
The Explorers from Islington completed the event in 4hrs 34mins finishing in
1st place for the second year running in their chosen 30km event. The team
from 8th Holborn completed the event in 7hrs 1 minute finishing in 7th place. And the Phoenix Flyers from CCI came second in the 50km event.
Kelly Owens said: “It was an amazing event. I never realised that I could walk that far. I love doing this kind of Scouting event as it pushes me to my limits.”
