County Awards Evening

The first ever County Awards Presentation Evening saw nearly 70 young people from every District across GLN being recognised for their outstanding achievements. These young people were Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members who had gained the top awards in their sections. They were all invited by Brian Coleman, The Mayor of Barnet, to his brand new Council Chamber at Barnet Town Hall. When they arrived they were shown to their own important seats inside the historic chamber, whilst parents were herded into the public gallery.

No less than four Deputy Lieutenants (otherwise known as The Queen’s representatives in Barnet, Haringey, Islington and Hackney) were there to help celebrate the achievements of all the young people who were in attendance at this spectacular event. Our very own Scouting Ambassador, Dr Terry Chimes was also present. Terry is perhaps better known as the founder member and drummer of the world famous punk rock band The Clash.

No less than 50 Scouts were presented with their Chief Scout’s Gold Award. They were followed by a number of Explorer Scouts who had completed their Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Then came more Explorer Scouts who had achieved their Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond Awards. This list included young people who had been to such faraway countries like Poland and even India for their expeditions and to help other people less fortunate them themselves.

The final and most significant presentation was reserved for Helen Sinclair, an inspirational Explorer Scout Leader at the 8th Holborn who had achieved her Queen’s Scout Award and Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. When interviewed after her presentation she spoke to all the young people present, saying that they too could also reach the same standard if they kept trying. Helen also said that she was looking forward to the forthcoming national Queen’s Scouts’ Gathering at Windsor Castle and is looking forward to meeting Bear Grylls and a member of The Royal Family.
