Chiltern 20 2011

Anniversary Adventure for 200 Scouts

What’s the best way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the top challenging hiking events for Scouts in the UK?  The answer is to hit the maximum number of 50 teams, sprinkle in some warm and sunny weather on the day, and finally give 220 young people an amazing adventure on the Chiltern Hills.  This is what The Chiltern 20 Challenge is all about as the 10-14 year olds perfected their teamwork and leadership skills by hiking and navigating their way through nine checkpoints, all walking in excess of 15 miles.  A couple of teams enjoyed themselves so much that they spent 11 hours completing the event, whilst the first team home breezed round in exactly fours hours.

This annual event was organised by a County team from Greater London North supported on the day by 100 adults who enjoyed a day in the countryside as much as the young people.  Participants came from across London and Hertfordshire plus four teams from 20th Torbay in Devon.

This year’s winners were from Ridgeway Scout Troop in Tring.  This was their fifth consecutive appearance and every other time they have finished in runners-up spot.  They finished some 41 minutes in front of last year’s winners from 23rd Southgate.  Not far behind were teams from 16th Hendon and 6th Friern Barnet.  Altogether, a total of 39 teams from GLN took part from every District.  The organisers were delighted with the fact that more girls than ever before took part this year, making up 41% of the total.

Maddie, aged 13, from Barnet said “What a brilliant day, and so well organised.  I have never walked so far in my life before and I can take home a certificate to prove it”.

Fozzy Foster, event secretary said “It was a joy to see all the participants going home clutching their individual and team certificates.  We also presented the Fitness Challenge Badge to those who had been working towards this award.  During the thirty years that this event has been taking place we have had over 5,000 participants walking a total of 75,000 miles.  That’s over three times around the world”.

The event organisers will now turn their attention to The Southern 50, designed for Explorer Scouts and adults in Scouting, taking place on Saturday 11th February 2012.  Further information can be found on www.scouts-gln-southern50.org.uk

All GLN Scouts are cordially invited to be part of the 30th Anniversary Chiltern 20 Challenge, taking place on Saturday 15th October 2011.

In order to properly celebrate the event’s 30th anniversary, the organising committee has planned something new and different this year.  They have decided to move the Chiltern Hills just a few miles to the east.  The start and finish of this year’s event will be at Cottered on the A507 between Baldock and Buntingford.  A top quality route has been created, and as usual, each team must comprise between three and five Scouts.  This event is open to any member of the Scout section being born after 15th April 1997.  A team may be accompanied by an adult if the Scout Leader decides this would be a safer option for the team.

Teams can enter online now on http://www.scouts-gln-southern50.org.uk/ and you can also download the usual documents which contains the new “Joining Instructions and Walk Instructions”.  Any enquiries to Fozzy on secretary@scouts-gln-southern50.org.uk

The Acorn E.S.U. and 1st Islington Scout Group in CCI took part in Bookbridge this summer. The project was collecting books to send to two new libraries in Cambodia.

In many schools around the world pupils are taught without any books at all. Bookbridge aims to change that by building libraries with donated books. In the summer of 2010 the first Bookbridge Library was built in Mongolia – it has 13,000 books and to date more than 25,000 children have benefited. In 2011 they are aiming to build six more libraries. The UK Scout Association has twinned up to help find books for the library in Cambodia.

As a group we collected in excess of 300 books which we sent off to the project. The whole group were all involved in the effort from Beavers to Explorers – the Beavers helped us count, the Cubs designed posters and Scouts sorted through the books to check they were appropriate. The Explorers and Leaders also made the 3hr trip to the national sorting days in Nottingham – whilst we were there we sorted through nearly 40,000 books, loading hundreds of boxes into containers! Across the country in excess of 70,000 books were collected.

You can find our more about Bookbridge, the libraries and our links with Scouts at www.bookbridge.org/scouts. The books collected will be a huge boost to children in Cambodia – thank you to every one that helped!

Following on from the success of the previous event held in March of last year the County will be holding this years event on Wednesday 16th November 2011 at the RAF Museum in Hendon at 7.30pm. This event is to celebrate the achievement of young people in gaining the highest awards in the Scout, Explorer Scout or Scout Network sections. The awards presented will include the Chief Scout’s Gold, Platinum and Diamond Awards, the Queen’s Scout Award and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

We have been fortunate to secure the use of the RAF Museum and it will provide marvelous surroundings in which to hold this year’s event. To ensure we have details of all young people who have achieved these awards since the last event, leaders have been asked to log these awards via the County website. The young people will then get a personal invitation to attend.

The 2011 Chiltern 20 Challenge Hike celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and will follow a similar format to last year’s highly successful and well-attended event. The Chiltern 20 is open to all Scout Troop members born after 15th April 1997. The Challenge is for teams of 3 – 5 Scouts and is a test of physical ability as well as good orienteering.

This year’s Chiltern 20 will be centred around an area of the Chiltern Hills which this event has never used before along with a new and a start/finish base. Team entries will be accepted on the online booking form from 1st August on www.scouts-gln-southern50.org.uk

Any adults who fancy a rewarding day helping out in the open air and seeing 250 young people get a real taste of adventure, please contact Chris Foster on secretary@scouts-gln-southern50.org.uk
