Making the most of recruitment leaflets

Recruitment leaflets generally work best when they are advertising a specific event – it prompts the recipient to take action (i.e. booking to attend the event).

I suggest you consider promoting an “open evening” for potential new recruits to come along to – it also makes life easier for leaders as they can plan appropriate activities for people who have not been part of Scouting before and don’t have one new child every week to deal with.

As always, the County Development Team can help you with planning this, and can support in a number of specific ways:

• Providing ideas for good activities for new members (we have some equipment you can use too)
• Attending the open evening to talk to parents of prospective members
• Contacting people in the local area who have previously enquired to invite them to attend
• Providing materials to give to parents of prospective members as part of a welcome pack

The County Team and the District Teams have gone from the conference to plan how to implement what has been asked for to help achieve our aim of Better Scouting For More Young People.

And the snow on Sunday didn’t stop the GSLs getting there – some even found time to be creative, whilst others were using their four wheel drive vehicles to keep the hotel drive clear…

Make sure your Group has responded by the deadline (16^th October)

Some of these new units may need help with  Programme Planning, ceremonies, games, organisation of an evening etc.  Others may only need somebody with a warrant to be present until their CRB’s etc. are sorted.  Obviously some will need a lot of support  and some much less depending on their knowledge and expertise and also whether there is good support within the Group.

I need  experienced leaders  who would be interested in helping these new sections.

Each  new unit will be different but it will be you  who will  decide  how much time and support you can give. Whether the support comes with a physical presence or as a source of help and support on the phone will vary.  I suspect that with most it will start as a physical presence to give advice and confidence and gradually become more remote.

It is a very worthwhile job to be doing and could make the difference between a flourishing section or a failing section.  Russ and I will always be there to support you.
