January 2012
From the 1st of January, all Scout venues should have a Performing Rights License to cover the use of music in the venue. Failure to have a license could result in prosecution. For most Scout premises, this will cost £42 per year – for full details, see the Scout Association site
The Leader Questionnaires will be collated for the Conference in the next few days, so the final date to complete the questionnaire is tomorrow, January 31st. Don’t miss this chance to affect County Communications, Training Offerings, Skills Instruction and Events – fill out the survey here: http://www.gln-scouts.org.uk/survey/
Sunday 22nd January, 140 Enfield leaders came together at Gilwell to plan the District’s programme and celebration camps for 2012. Of the 28 groups in the District, only one was not represented. An excellent day, with the majority of leaders from the District there to get to grips with the opportunities 2012 presents.
DATES
Friday 13th to Sunday 15th April 2012 AND Friday 11th to Sunday 13th May 2012
Module 8—Skills of Leadership
Module 16—Nights Away
Module 17—Activities Outdoors
Module 18—Practical Skills

Module 8 is based around Leadership skills not just within the unit but at camp as well.
Leaders will also require these modules to be validated as well.

Speech, language and communication needs
Young people with speech, language and communication needs (often referred to as ‘SLCN’) can have difficulties speaking, listening and understanding what others have said, which in turn can mean they struggle to read, learn, join in, make friends and achieve.
A large number of young people are affected by SLCN, and about one in ten will have a long-term difficulty which needs ongoing support. In some areas up to 50% of children will start primary school with some form of SLCN, some of which can be resolved with appropriate support.
Scouting speaks to all
The Scout Association has produced a guide called ‘Scouting speaks to all’ to help leaders improve the Scouting experience for young people with these difficulties.
The downloadable resource contains:
- information on different kinds of SLCN, including where to find out more about each one
- hints for leaders on how to communicate more effectively with young people who have these difficulties
- a section on various methods of alternative communication.
Communication needs covered include specific language impairment, dyslexia and dyspraxia, hearing impairment and autistic spectrum disorders.
The resource was produced with advice from specialist charity The Communication Trust.

On the evening of Tuesday 10th January, London’s Mayor Boris Johnson held the Annual Mayoral Community reception. The only young people attending were Scouts from Camden and 7 Explorer Scouts from Barnet.
The Barnet Explorers were each wearing a compass around their necks, Boris asked about this, and was happy to receive instruction on setting a compass bearing.
Boris Johnson then learned the new trend of “Squirrel Walking” from Barnet Explorer Tamara West, whom he suggested should be on the TV. The rest of Barnet Explorers mingled with other guests, and have been offered Afternoon Tea with the Mayor of Barnet, and an interest was shown from the Ambulance and the Fire Service to run evenings for the Explorer Group.
Those representing Explorers from Barnet were, Amy & David Austin, Rebecca Cattlin, Tom Partridge, Seren Thomas, Maisie Thornton and Tamara West.
The GLN County Programme Conference for GSLs, District and County teams is at the beginning of February.
In order to help them with planning, there is a short online Leaders Survey to gather information ahead of the discussions. The survey asks for your opinions and ideas on County Events, Communications, Training and Permits and Skills.
All Leaders and helpers should fill this out – it will only take 5 or 10 minutes – even if you have never been to a County event.
The Survey is at http://www.gln-scouts.org.uk/survey – thank you for helping make the County even Greater!
If you’re looking to gain your Terrain 1 or 2 Hillwalking Activity Permit, then this is a great opportunity to get it done before the summer.
The weekend will be run on a self-catering, camping basis and will take place in North Wales.
Full details and definitions of Terrain 1 and 2 can be found on the Scoutbase website (POR 9.29 and 9.30 respectively), as are details of the assessment criteria. Also on the site are details of the Adventurous Activity Permit Scheme.
Our assessors are all friendly, qualified, experienced hillwalkers and the whole point of the weekend is to get you authorised to get out into the hills safely with your groups and have some fun!
If you think you’re ready for an assessment and are interested in registering for this weekend, or have any questions then please email us at the address below.
We are also running a pre-assessment “meet the assessors” evening to answer any questions you may have in person, and generally provide as much help and support as we can. This will take place on the evening of Thursday 1st March 2012, venue TBC.
The long term aim is to get young people out enjoying the hills with authorised, competent leaders. If you would like to be part of this then we look forward to seeing you.

If you write anything for Scouting, from notices to websites and press releases, you should read the style guide for written communication in Scouting
The style guide for The Scout Association has been updated to provide a more comprehensive guide, to include updates to ensure it stays relevant and to keep communication clear for the newest of members. The style guide exists with the intention of promoting accuracy and consistency throughout The Association’s written communications, not just from HQ but locally too. It aims to encourage a recognisable family style, and establish standard good practice. The style guide should be regarded as a set of guidelines; it is not intended to ‘cramp your style’.
Anything with a publication date of 1 January 2012 onwards will reflect the new style guide while existing books and resources will be updated when they are being reviewed.
Please share the guide with members of your team who regularly write communications for Scouting in your area. For queries, questions or clarifications contact styleguide@scouts.org.uk.
Please remember that any communications with the press must be done in conjunction with the County Media Development Manager, Stephen Way – communications@gln-scouts.org.uk
